Lucknow Named UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy for Its Legendary Kebabs and Biryani
December 20, 2025
The northern Indian city of Lucknow is now on the UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy list. The city is famous for its mouth-watering kebabs, fragrant biryani, and cloud-like desserts. Tim Curtis, director at UNESCO's South Asia office, said the recognition "is a testament to its deep-rooted culinary traditions and vibrant food ecosystem." Lucknow becomes only the second Indian city to receive this title after Hyderabad. Chef Ranveer Brar said, "Better late than never. It should have come before." The city's cuisine, known as Awadhi, blends Persian and Indian flavors with slow-cooked dishes like the famous Dum pukht style. The galouti kebabs, made soft for an aging nawab, are one of its signature dishes. Beyond kebabs and biryani, Lucknow also offers vegetarian delights, sweets, and street foods like spicy chaat. Local spots like Sharmaji Tea Stall and Netram serve traditional snacks daily, preserving recipes for generations. Madhavi Kuckreja, founder of Sanatkada Trust, said, "'What will be cooked, how will it be cooked?' is a continued conversation from waking up until going to bed in most homes." Chef Brar hopes UNESCO's recognition will bring more attention to Lucknow's hidden food gems. With this global spotlight, the city aims to showcase its rich culinary stories and attract visitors eager to taste its unique dishes.
