Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting West Bengal's Nadia district on Saturday, December 20, 2025. He will inaugurate national highway projects and speak at a public rally amid tensions over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. This is Modi's first visit since draft SIR rolls were published and third in five months. He will address the Matua community’s concerns near Ranaghat in Taherpur, close to the Namasudra Hindu community area. Assembly elections are due early next year, making this visit crucial for BJP's poll strategy. Modi tweeted, “The people of West Bengal are benefiting from numerous pro-people initiatives of the Central government. At the same time, they are suffering due to the Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) misgovernance in every sector.” The TMC opposes the SIR exercise, claiming it is rushed and risks disenfranchisement of many voters, especially refugee Hindus. The draft electoral rolls excluded 58,20,899 names, cutting the electorate to 7.08 crore. Around 1.36 crore entries face "logical discrepancies" and 30 lakh voters remain unmapped. Many Matuas fear exclusion due to a lack of required documents during the verification phase, stirring worries among the Dalit Hindu community who migrated from Bangladesh. BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar from Ranaghat believes fears are spread intentionally and hopes Modi’s message will clear doubts. Sarkar expects the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) eligibility deadline to extend from 2014 to 2024, easing citizenship for persecuted migrants. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called Modi’s visit a “damage control exercise,” accusing BJP of making empty citizenship promises since 2019. Mamata Banerjee has led protests against the SIR in Nadia and North 24 Parganas, districts with large Matua populations. During the visit, Modi will inaugurate a ₹3,200 crore project, including the 66.7-km four-laning of NH-34 between Barajaguli and Krishnanagar in Nadia and lay the foundation for four-laning the 17.6-km Barasat–Barajaguli stretch in North 24 Parganas. These roads will strengthen links between Kolkata and Siliguri, boosting trade and tourism in the state’s north and south, officials said.
