150+ Families Made Homeless as Govt Clears Land for Waste Management Project in Yelahanka
December 20, 2025
More than 150 families were left homeless after government agencies demolished homes at Kogilu Layout in Yelahanka early Saturday. Authorities said the houses stood on government land meant for solid waste projects. The demolition started around 4 a.m. with earthmovers. Residents were asked to leave immediately. Elderly Jaitun Bi said, "They came with the equipment and told us to vacate the houses. We were not even given time to take our documents." Shazia A. said families, including pregnant women and children, are now sheltering in a nearby school playground. Attempts to get help from MLA Krishna Byre Gowda failed as he "refused to listen to their concerns." Resident Sayed Mustafa stated, "We have Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, ration cards and even electricity bills that carry this address. We have been living here for 30 years. How can we be evicted without any prior notice?" The settlement includes Waseem Layout and Fakir Colony, with families relying largely on alms or informal work for decades. Many now sit exposed, facing cold nights. Dhudiyuva Janara Vedike, a workers' forum, arranged food for the displaced. They demand government shelter, permanent housing under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme, and compensation. Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) issued a statement saying the land, about five acres at Kogilu Bande, was illegally occupied. CEO Karee Gowda detailed plans for bio-methanation, animal rendering, incineration, coconut waste processing, and sanitary waste units on site. Officials reclaimed the land, removing over 150 temporary sheds. The demolition involved police, fire services, North City Corporation, Revenue Department, Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force, 70 marshals, and around 200 staff. BSWML valued the reclaimed land at ₹15 crore guidance value and nearly ₹80 crore market value. The land will now host the proposed solid waste projects.
