Over 50% Electors Removed in Chennai and Tiruppur Clusters in Tamil Nadu’s Draft Electoral Roll
December 21, 2025
Tamil Nadu’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll removed over half of the removed electors from just two clusters involving eight districts. These include four northern districts in the Chennai cluster (Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu) and four western districts in the Tiruppur cluster (Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, Dindigul).
In the Chennai cluster, one-fourth of the electors were deleted, cutting the electorate from 1.17 crore to 87.54 lakh across 37 Assembly segments. The Tiruppur cluster saw a removal of 19.42% electors—18.64 lakh out of 96.01 lakh electors in 33 Assembly segments. Together, these eight districts accounted for 50.17% of all electors removed.
Despite the large deletions, the total share of these clusters in Tamil Nadu's electorate dropped only slightly—from 33.34% before the SIR to 30.33% in the draft roll. Chennai's share fell from 18.37% to 16.1%, while Tiruppur's share held steady at about 14%.
Development economist Venkatesh Athreya explained that the high removal rates may be due to the dense electorate and many migrant workers linked with industrial activity. Many migrants registered in these districts may have returned to their original towns or villages during the COVID-19 period, resulting in their removal from the rolls.
