Express Train Kills Seven Elephants in Assam, Including Calves
December 21, 2025
Seven wild Asian elephants, including calves, were killed early on Saturday when a Delhi-bound express train hit a herd crossing railway tracks in Assam's Hojai district. Local officials confirmed another calf was injured in the collision. The Northeast Frontier Railway stated the train driver saw dozens of elephants and applied emergency brakes, but some elephants were still struck. The accident caused five train carriages to derail, but passengers and staff escaped without injury. Train services were canceled and diverted during the day. The dead elephants were examined by veterinarians and later buried. Assam holds about 6,000 elephants, one of India's largest populations. Unlike usual incidents, this accident occurred at a location not marked as an elephant corridor by the Northeast Frontier Railway.
