Karnataka Voter Fraud Case Links BJP Leaders to 5,994 Forged Deletions in Aland
December 22, 2025
In Karnataka's Aland assembly constituency, nearly 6,000 forged voter deletion forms triggered a major fraud probe. The Returning Officer lodged a complaint in February 2023 after discovering fake Form 7 applications deleting genuine voters, mostly Congress supporters. An FIR was registered, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed charges against BJP MLA Subhash Guttedar and his son Harshananda for hiring a private firm to delete rival voters' names.
The fraud surfaced when a Booth Level Officer spotted a forged deletion application against her brother. A deeper review found 5,994 forged forms out of 6,018. The Election Commission (EC) shared critical data, including IP logs and mobile numbers that created fake accounts on the National Voters' Service Portal (NVSP).
Despite some delays by the EC, investigation revealed the forged forms linked to a call center in Kalaburagi run by Akram and Aslam Pasha. They confessed to submitting fake forms after being paid by the Guttedars. Digital devices and a money trail were seized, proving a conspiracy to remove rival voters.
Investigators uncovered a cyber link through 'otpbazar.online', a website selling OTP codes to fake mobile logins, used to create the forged deletion forms. The website's operator from West Bengal was arrested. The site is linked to a U.S.-based platform, complicating the probe.
The case exposed six security lapses in NVSP, including weak OTP verification. Following the scandal and Rahul Gandhi's press conference, the EC introduced a new e-sign feature requiring Aadhar-linked mobile verification to secure voter updates. However, not all portal loopholes have been fixed yet.
This is the first well-documented case directly tying BJP leaders to alleged “vote chori” in Karnataka. It highlights vulnerabilities in India's voting system and the efforts underway to improve electoral integrity.
