Universal Studios’ parent company, Comcast, is exploring plans for a multibillion-dollar theme park in Saudi Arabia. The park would be located in Qiddiya, the Kingdom’s large new hub for leisure and tourism near Riyadh. The project is still in the early concept phase and no construction approvals have been given yet. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts recently visited Saudi Arabia for an investment conference and toured the Qiddiya site. He confirmed the project is in early planning and nothing is finalized. It’s also unclear which Universal franchises or rides will feature in the park. This potential Universal Studios theme park is part of a bigger entertainment boom in the Gulf. Earlier this year, Disney announced plans for a theme park in Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia is also developing Six Flags Qiddiya City, its first theme park, set to open by December 31, 2025. These developments support Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy and grow the tourism sector. Qiddiya is huge, covering 334 square kilometres—about 2.5 times larger than Disney World in Florida. The Saudi Public Investment Fund aims for it to attract 48 million visitors yearly and add SAR17 billion ($4.5 billion) to the economy. Tourism is already booming, with over 100 million visitors in 2024, including 30 million from abroad. In the first half of 2025, Saudi Arabia saw around 60.9 million visitors. The Universal Studios project shows growing global interest in Saudi Arabia’s entertainment market. If completed, it would be a major highlight of Qiddiya and strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a top tourist destination by 2030.
