Oman Launches First Polymer One-Rial Banknote with Advanced Security from 2026
December 22, 2025
Oman has introduced its first polymer one-rial banknote, set to start circulating on January 11, 2026. This new note is made from durable polymer, unlike traditional cotton-based notes. It is designed to last longer and include advanced security features that fight counterfeiting.
The Central Bank of Oman released the note, which measures 145 by 76 millimetres and combines modern design with national pride. The front shows the Oman Botanic Garden, symbolizing Oman’s care for its natural heritage. The back features the Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Cultural Complex along with Duqm Port and Refinery, representing Oman’s cultural landmarks and economic growth.
Security features include a large transparent window inspired by the garden’s arched windows. The front also displays a color-shifting foil with the frankincense tree, and the Central Bank’s logo on the back uses iridescent, color-shifting ink. These details make the note both attractive and secure.
The Central Bank confirmed the polymer note will circulate alongside existing one-rial notes and remains fully legal for transactions. Limited editions for collectors will also be available, including 1,000 uncut sheets and 10,000 specially packaged notes. These can be bought from January 11, 2026, at Central Bank counters in Ruwi, Salalah, Sohar, and Oman Post’s outlet at the Opera Galleria.
By blending strong material with culturally rich designs, Oman’s new polymer one-rial banknote reflects the nation’s achievements and ensures greater durability and security.
