Tamil Sci-Fi for Children: Local Stories Meet Future Tech in Affordable Books
December 22, 2025
Tamil sci-fi books for children are gaining popularity. These books mix familiar neighbourhood scenes with futuristic inventions, making science fun and easy to understand.
Kamalalayan from Bharathi Puthakalayam, a Chennai publisher, said, “Tamil science fiction written exclusively for children is a niche, but it has been steadily growing compared to previous decades.” His publishing house has released over 100 Tamil sci-fi titles and ensures they are available at book fairs.
Writer Era Natarasan, also called ‘Ayisha’ Natarasan, chooses to write Tamil sci-fi to help students interested in science. He said some non-profit groups bring government school kids to book fairs where his books sell for just five to 10 rupees. “Many Tamil-medium students who come from underprivileged backgrounds may be the first graduates in their families. When they pick up a Tamil sci-fi title, it can transform their lives,” he said.
Writer Komako Elango shares that Tamil sci-fi often explores ecology, technology, and environmental care through exciting stories. “Reading itself has become a long-lost habit, so new-age writers are trying to make Tamil sci-fi more interesting by combining science with fantasy,” he explained.
Retired zoology professor Mohana S. writes stories set in towns like Sivakasi to keep sci-fi relatable and less scary for kids but admits the genre needs careful research.
Journalist Adhi Valliappan highlighted State government projects like Ilanthalir Ilakkiya Thittam and Vaasippu Iyakkam. These make science books easier to access for Tamil-medium children. He said, “If English-medium students can enjoy reading sci-fi in English, Tamil-medium students from underprivileged backgrounds deserve the same exposure.” His own books also discuss climate change.
Government fortnightly Tamil magazines Thenchittu and Puthuoonjal reach schoolchildren with science fiction and comics. Bala Bharathi, editor-in-chief, said, “Science-related work for children is not limited anymore.” These efforts spread science through fun Tamil stories all over Tamil Nadu.
