Unique Indian Christmas Lunches Showcase Rich Regional Flavors Across Bengaluru
December 23, 2025
Christmas lunches in Indian homes are truly unique, especially in Bengaluru where Christian families from different regions come together. Clive VanBuerle, an Anglo-Indian from Bengaluru, says, “On Christmas day, we generally do a potluck with my siblings and their families. There is lots of food and games.” Their table features chicken, pork, or buff roasts, Russian salad, cutlets, Christmas pudding, meatloaf, and shepherd’s pie. Clive adds, “Christmas for an Anglo-Indian is where we celebrate our Anglo roots.” In Mangalorean homes, preparations start 10 days before Christmas with kuswar sweets like kidos and chaklios. Alexander Herman D’Souza shares their lunch menu includes pork bafat, indad, chicken sukka, and rice noodles. Hyderabad-born Sarah Supriya sticks to biryani for Christmas lunch, now often cooking donne biryani in Bengaluru along with kheema balls and pepper chicken. Mizo traditions bring chhangban, a sweet sticky rice snack made with jaggery. Lalfakawma Ralte says, “We come together on Christmas eve, sing carols and eat the snacks,” followed by pork dishes. Goan Catholic Mafalda Quadros prepares Portuguese-influenced sweets like bebinca and dodol. Her Christmas lunch has sorpotel curry and xacuti served with aroze pulao. Mafalda vows, “I want to keep the tradition alive. So, I make everything exactly the way we did back in Goa.” These diverse festive meals reflect the rich cultural mosaic of Indian Christianity and add special flavor to Christmas celebrations in Bengaluru.
