Russia Hits Ukraine with Deadly Drone and Missile Attacks Causing Power Cuts and Fires
December 23, 2025
Several Ukrainian regions faced power cuts on Tuesday after Russia launched a large-scale attack using drones and missiles. Ukraine’s energy ministry said, "Russia once again is attacking our energy infrastructure. As a result, emergency power outages have been introduced in a number of Ukrainian regions." Fires broke out in several areas as temperatures neared freezing, according to Ukraine’s power operator, Ukrenergo.
One person died in the western Khmelnytsky region, and another was killed in Kyiv. Several others, including children, were wounded. Meanwhile, Poland scrambled jets to protect its airspace during the strikes, the country’s military stated on X.
Russia intensified its assaults on the southern port city of Odesa, aiming to destroy maritime logistics. Emergency services reported fires in Odesa but no injuries on Tuesday. The Black Sea region suffered attacks on bridges, ports, and power supplies, leaving thousands without electricity and heating during winter.
The latest wave of strikes came after peace talks held over the weekend in Miami between Russian, Ukrainian, and US delegations. Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said, "Slow progress is being observed," while US envoy Steve Witkoff described the discussions as "constructive" but without any breakthrough.
