The Telangana government carried out its first state-level mock exercise on disaster response on Monday. The exercise was organized with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and focused on floods and industrial accidents. This comes amid recent climate challenges like heavy rainfall, flash floods, and rising industrial accidents in the state. The mock drill covered 12 districts prone to floods: Khammam, Warangal, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Medak, Mahabubnagar, Hyderabad, Suryapet, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Nirmal, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, and Hanamkonda. Industrial disaster drills were held in five districts: Sangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, and Nalgonda, plus at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. Officials explained the main goals: "assess and strengthen disaster preparedness at the State and district levels," "operationalise incident response systems," and "evaluate inter-departmental coordination". The exercise also helped test emergency support functions and clarify roles for agencies like the State Disaster Management Authority and Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre. The flood drills improved understanding of flood risks and emergency steps. Officials tested early warning and communication systems and spotted operational gaps. The exercises stressed the need for timely evacuations, safe routes, shelters, and readiness of rescue teams and equipment. They also revealed the importance of better agency coordination, community awareness, and regular training. Industrial accident drills showed the value of mutual aid among nearby industries during fires, chemical leaks, and power failures. Exercises tested procedures for chemical incidents, fire outbreaks, and evacuation protocols. They also evaluated alarm systems and emergency gear. Officials highlighted the need for closer coordination with fire services, police, and medical teams. The drills helped improve on-site and off-site emergency plans and boost overall disaster readiness in Telangana.
