Fresh Survey Ordered to Resolve Fishing Dispute at Godavari River Barrage
December 23, 2025
A new survey has been commissioned to settle a dispute over fishing rights in the Godavari river. Fisherfolk from East Godavari and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema districts have been arguing about access to wild prawn seed at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage.
This year, the Dowleswaram Matsakara Sangham won the lease to collect wild prawn seed from the river. But the Bobbarlanka Matsakara Sangham objected and protested restrictions on their collection rights.
On December 23, 2025, Joint Collectors T. Nishanthi of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema and Y. Megha Swaroop of East Godavari met with officials from Fisheries, Irrigation, and Survey departments. Acting on court orders, they instructed a fresh survey to define the exact borders between the two districts.
"The Departments of Fisheries, Irrigation and Survey will submit their report on the boundaries of the two districts at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage on December 30," said the Joint Collectors in an official release. They added that the next meeting with both fisherfolk groups will take place on January 22, 2026.
Until then, the collection of wild prawn seed at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage is banned. This move aims to avoid further tensions while the border issue is resolved.
