The December Music Season is shining bright with big anniversaries for classic Carnatic music hosts. The Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha (SPSS), the oldest music organisation of its kind, turns 125 this year. Founded from its parent Sangita Vidwat Sabha in 1896 and registered in 1900, SPSS has a rich past stretching beyond claims. Meanwhile, the Sri Tyagabrahma Gana Sabha (STGS) in T. Nagar celebrates its 80th year. Started by actor and musical expert Chittoor V. Nagiah and other noted founders, STGS gained fame with its Vani Mahal auditorium, inaugurated in 1945. Unlike many others, STGS owns its land, ensuring financial stability. The Narada Gana Sabha shares this rare financial security among music bodies. Meanwhile, the Music Academy is hosting its 99th annual conference, aiming for its centenary in 2028. Adding to the festive mood, the Margazhi Maha Utsavam (MMU), a global Carnatic fest launched by Maximum Media, has completed 25 years and entered its 26th. MMU pioneered Carnatic music's broadcast on cable TV and the internet, drawing worldwide audiences while keeping the magic of live shows alive. Despite challenges from technology and the pandemic, live performances remain irreplaceable for music lovers. As these Sabhas celebrate history, they also reflect on evolving times, with live music still capturing hearts in an era of digital disruption.
