The Union Cabinet approved the expansion of Delhi Metro’s Project 5-A on December 24, 2025. The project will cost ₹12,015 crore and add about 16 kilometres of track with 13 stations, including 10 underground ones. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “There are 12 lines so far, and six new projects are already under construction to extend existing lines.” He added that with phase 5-A, the Delhi Metro will cross 400 kilometres in length and rank among the world’s top five metro systems, serving over 65 lakh commuters daily.
Project 5-A includes three new lines: Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Aerocity to Airport Terminal-1, and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj. On the Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj line, Vaishnaw said, “Kalindi to Tughlakabad extension will give direct Gurugram connectivity to commuters from Noida and Faridabad. This will save us significant amount of time in commuters’ lives, this will be a major difference.”
He further noted that the corridor will improve access to Kartavya Bhawan, benefiting workers from neighboring states. It will also reduce Delhi’s traffic congestion and pollution levels. Explaining the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg line, Vaishnaw said, “This RK Ashram Marg corridor will connect the airport line with the Central Secretariat station and then to Indraprastha in the blue line.” This major expansion is set to boost Delhi’s public transport network significantly.
