6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Taiwan's Taitung, No Immediate Damage
December 24, 2025
An earthquake measuring 6.1 hit Taiwan on Wednesday, striking Taitung county at 5:47 pm local time. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 11.9 kilometres. The local weather agency reported the magnitude as 6.1, though the US Geological Survey later revised it to 6. The tremor was also felt in Taipei, where buildings shook, and videos showed supermarket items falling off shelves in Taitung. No immediate reports of damage or injuries have appeared. Taiwan lies on the edge of two tectonic plates near the Pacific Ring of Fire, the world's most active seismic zone. It experiences earthquakes regularly. The previous major quake was in April 2024, registering 7.4 magnitude. That quake was the strongest in 25 years, causing 17 deaths, landslides, and widespread damage, especially near Hualien. The 2024 event remains the most serious since the deadly 7.6 magnitude quake of 1999, Taiwan's worst natural disaster.
