8 Arrested in Hubballi Honour Killing; Injured Treated, Officials Visit Amid Protests

Tension continues in Inam Veerapur village, Hubballi taluk, Dharwad district, after an honour killing on Sunday. Eight people have been arrested so far, and a search is on for more accused. On Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J., Kundgol MLA M.R. Patil, and police officials visited the village. They saw the homes of Vivekanand Doddamani and his family, now locked and barricaded. The family is in a private hospital in Hubballi after injuries from the attack. Security was tightened as a precaution.
The officials met villagers, some of whom shared their grievances. MLAs Mahesh Tenginakai, Prasad Abbayya, and MLC F.H. Jakkappanavar also visited Vivekanand Hospital. They checked on Vivekanand Doddamani, husband of the deceased Manya, and other injured family members. MLC Jakkappanavar was joined by Dalit leaders Venkatesh Sagabal, Ashok Doddamani, and Basavaraj Benakal. He offered condolences and gave personal financial aid. The MLAs asked doctors about the health and treatment of the victims.
On Tuesday night, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu handed a cheque of ₹5 lakh to Vivekanand Doddamani's family at the hospital. Those injured include Vivekanand Doddamani, Mareppa Doddamani, Sunil Harijan, Sangeeta Harijan, Renavva, Ananya Doddamani, Yallappa Doddamani, and Huvamma Doddamani. The Deputy Commissioner followed their recovery closely.
There was drama at the hospital when Dalit organisation members protested against the Deputy Commissioner’s visit on the third day after the incident. They blocked her car and staged a sit-in, accusing officials of apathy. Police stepped in to restore calm.
