Eleven people have been arrested following a mass shooting that killed nine at a tavern in Bekkersdal, near Johannesburg, South Africa. The shooting happened around 1:00 AM local time on Sunday. Police are searching for 12 unidentified gunmen. Major General Fred Kekana said nine of the arrested are from Lesotho, one from Mozambique, and one is a South African mineworker. Investigations suggest the attack relates to illegal mining turf wars. During the shooting, gunmen kept firing as people ran away, killing two patrons and a nearby taxi driver. Police found several unlicensed weapons, including an AK-47, on the suspects. South Africa holds about 3 million legal and an equal number of unlicensed firearms. Despite a drop in mass shootings in 2025, attacks injuring or killing four or more people have increased since 2020, especially at taverns or illegal drinking spots called shebeens. Sunday's attack follows another recent shooting at Saulsville Hostel in Pretoria, killing eleven including a three-year-old child.
