Calm Returns to Violence-Hit West Karbi Anglong in Assam Amid Tight Security
December 25, 2025
An uneasy calm returned to violence-hit areas of West Karbi Anglong district in Assam on Thursday, December 25, 2025. Officials confirmed no new incidents of violence were reported as large security forces kept close watch. The conflict is between the Karbi and Bihari communities. They dispute over alleged encroachment on Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) lands in tribal areas by the Hindi-speaking Bihari people.
A senior official told PTI, "The situation is calm now and there is no report of any violence. Our forces are on the ground and they are patrolling all sensitive areas." The security personnel include Assam Police, Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indian Army. The funerals of the two who died were held peacefully Wednesday night according to their customs. Specially-abled youth Suresh Dey was found dead in his house-cum-shop set ablaze by a Karbi mob. Athik Timung, from the indigenous tribe, was killed in police firing.
The worst-hit Kheroni area houses Bihari, Bengali, Nepali, and Karbi communities. Despite improvement, prohibitory orders and mobile data shutdown remain. Another official said, "We are constantly reviewing the ground situation. We will inform the public as and when a new decision is taken. Presently, we are seeing people coming out of their homes and trying to return to their normal lives."
The Karbi community had a 15-day hunger strike demanding eviction of alleged illegal settlers mostly from Bihar. Violence erupted after police removed three agitators from the protest site early Monday. The administration said the removal was for hospitalisation. The clashes on Tuesday left one killed by police firing and another burnt alive by a mob. More than 70 people were injured, including over 60 police officers.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday that the Karbi demand to evict alleged Hindi-speaking settlers cannot be accepted immediately due to a Gauhati High Court stay. An Army column of 60-80 personnel was deployed and conducted flag marches in the troubled areas to maintain peace.
