The Forest Department captured a female tigress near Bandipur on Thursday after reports of cattle kills in the buffer zone. A large cage, placed on December 14 in Depapura village, helped trap the animal aged about five years. Villages like Huttur, Somanapura, and Depapura had seen frequent cattle kills, and officials say this tigress was responsible. After capture, the tigress was examined and found to be healthy. She was moved to Bandipur where wildlife vets will monitor her condition. Senior forest officials will decide whether to relocate her in the jungle or send her to a rescue centre. S. Prabhakaran, Director of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, along with Special Tiger Task Force and veterinary officers Wasim Mirza and Adarsh, were present during the capture. The area continues to see human-tiger conflicts. In November, three farmers died in attacks believed to be linked to habitat disturbances. Due to this, all safaris in wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves in the State are temporarily suspended. Multiple teams are still combing the buffer zone to track and manage wildlife threats.
