Heavy Rains in California Cause Floods, Mudslides; Three Dead and State of Emergency Declared
December 26, 2025
Heavy rain storms hit large parts of California, causing floods and mudslides. By Christmas night, three people had died. The storms brought up to 11 inches (27 cm) of rain in some spots of Los Angeles County. Roads were closed and people were evacuated. Emergency teams rescued people stuck in floodwaters.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday for Los Angeles and other southern counties. About 100,000 people lost power by Thursday evening. The US Weather Prediction Center warned of possible flash floods and river flooding.
Deaths included a 64-year-old man in San Diego killed by a fallen tree on Wednesday morning. A 74-year-old died over the weekend when floodwaters swept him from his vehicle in Redding, said the town mayor. Another woman in her 70s was swept into the ocean by a large wave at MacKerricher State Park, police said.
San Bernardino County residents faced evacuation warnings. Flash flood warnings were active in the San Francisco Bay area, where winds reached over 100 mph near San Jose. In Altadena, a mudslide hit areas damaged by January wildfires.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared an emergency and urged caution on roads during busy holiday travel. "I am urging all Angelenos to stay safe and be extremely careful on the roads if you absolutely must travel," she said. "Please do not take this storm lightly."
The storms were caused by atmospheric rivers carrying huge moisture from the tropics amid one of the busiest travel weeks, CBS News reported.
