A new 2.4-kilometre, 35-metre wide conventional bridge is being built over the Mir Alam Tank in Hyderabad. Contrary to earlier speculation, the bridge is not cable-stayed but similar to a normal flyover, said a site supervisor. The bridge will have multiple piers built in the water, with ornamental lighting and a 1.5-metre footpath offering views of Nehru Zoological Park and Mir Mahmood ki Pahadi. "The deepest part is nearly 12 metres, and other parts go nine metres deep. Pillars will stand in the lake, and roundabouts at both ends will help traffic flow smoothly," said the official. KNR Constructions received approval for the ₹319.24 crore EPC contract with a 24-month deadline. The large earthworks near the local sewer treatment plant have caused concern among residents and drivers. Activist S.Q. Masood said, "Already the lake has shrunk. We were expecting a cable-stayed bridge so that the lake will survive in its current condition. If it is a conventional bridge, more of the lake will be lost affecting the ecology and the fragile environment near the landmark zoo park." Mir Alam Tank, created over 220 years ago by Nizam's Prime Minister Mir Alam, was built as a drinking water source. However, encroachments and sewage plants have reduced its size. Water quality tests in January 2025 showed the lake has high contamination, making it unsafe even for recreation. Traffic on Hyderabad’s other side of the Musi river has improved with new flyovers, but old bottlenecks remain. The new bridge over Mir Alam Tank aims to divert some traffic to the road below the PVNR Expressway, easing congestion at Aramaghar and Purana Pul junctions.
