Man Injured After Jumping From Upper Floor of Grand Mosque in Makkah; Security Officer Hurt

A man was hurt after jumping from the upper levels of the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Thursday, December 25, Saudi officials said. Security officers quickly stepped in when the man moved toward the edge of the upper floors. During the rescue attempt, a security officer got injured trying to prevent the man from hitting the ground.
Both the man and the injured officer were taken to the hospital for medical care. The Emirate of Makkah Region posted on X that the Special Force for the Security of the Grand Mosque “immediately initiated action” after the man’s attempt. They added the officer suffered fractures. Legal procedures were completed following regulations.
The Haram Security Forces also confirmed the event, saying, “There was an incident of a person attempting to take his own life from the upper floors of the Grand Mosque. A security officer was injured while trying to prevent him from hitting the ground at the moment of his fall. Both individuals were immediately transferred to receive the necessary medical care, and the required official procedures were completed.”
The Saudi Ministry of Interior praised the prompt response by the Special Force to keep worshippers safe. Videos online showed the man walking toward the edge before security officers rushed to stop him. The Saudi General Directorate of Public Security shared the video and praised the quick action.
Chief Imam Abdur Rahman As Sudais addressed the incident, urging pilgrims to respect the holy site and follow rules. He quoted the Quran: “And do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands.”
Authorities began immediate proceedings after the incident but did not release details about the man’s identity or condition. The Grand Mosque is closely monitored by security teams trained to handle emergencies at one of Islam’s holiest places.
Similar cases happened before, including in 2017 when a man died after jumping near the Kaaba, and some other incidents in 2018 and 2024.
