Winter Storm Halts NYC Christmas Travel With Up to 9 Inches of Snow
December 26, 2025
New York City entered the post-Christmas travel rush under winter storm warnings on Friday. Snow began late Friday afternoon and is expected to intensify overnight into Saturday. Forecasters predict snowfall rates could reach an inch per hour, with total accumulations between 5 and 9 inches in the hardest-hit areas. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island. Winter weather advisories also cover parts of southern Connecticut.
Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to prepare for hazardous travel conditions. He said, "As New Yorkers continue to celebrate the holidays and prepare to celebrate the new year, they should also prepare for hazardous travel conditions Friday into Saturday. New York City agencies have been coordinating and are prepared for the winter weather system, and we continue to monitor conditions closely."
Snowfall is expected to begin Friday evening, peak overnight, and ease by Saturday morning, although some flurries may last longer. Early Saturday morning could bring sleet or freezing rain, especially between Philadelphia and New York City. Cold temperatures will keep roads slippery.
The storm hits during peak holiday travel when nearly 15 million travellers are expected through major airports, bridges, and tunnels in the New York-New Jersey area. LaGuardia, JFK, Newark, and Philadelphia International Airports are on alert for delays and cancellations. Major highways including I-95, I-94, I-90, I-80, and I-91 will also be affected.
New York City Emergency Management issued a travel advisory for Friday night into Saturday and activated the Winter Weather Emergency Plan. The Department of Sanitation has deployed hundreds of salt spreaders and stands ready to plough the streets. City agencies are working closely with the National Weather Service and state partners.
This is one of New York City’s most significant winter storms in years. "It has been more than 1,400 days since New York City recorded over six inches of snow in a 24-hour period," said the FOX Forecast Center. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on road and flight conditions.
