December 26, 2025
A 43-year-old woman from Nanjangud died on Friday after the helium cylinder blast outside Mysuru Palace on Thursday night. She was critically injured and treated in the ICU of K.R. Hospital. This raises the death toll to two. The first victim was Saleem, a 40-year-old balloon seller from Uttar Pradesh who died at the scene. Another woman, Lakshmi from Bengaluru, is still being treated at a private hospital.
The injured also include Kotresh Beerappa from Ranebennur, who is undergoing treatment at K.R. Hospital. Mysuru district Minister H.C. Mahadevappa visited the injured and assured that the government will pay for their medical expenses. He called the event an "unfortunate incident" and promised a detailed study to prevent future mishaps.
Mr. Mahadevappa said the balloon seller was preparing the gas himself using chemicals, which contributed to the blast. He described it as a lesson and assured that precautionary measures will be taken.
The balloon seller had previously sold ice cream and was among many seasonal workers in Mysuru engaged in small businesses. Two family members accompanied him during his work in the city.
The National Investigating Agency (NIA) has sought information about the blast as part of their routine procedures. Mr. Mahadevappa said the agency does not currently consider the event serious but might visit Mysuru for investigation.
Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar also visited the hospital. He stressed the urgent need to enforce zoning regulations for roadside hawkers in busy tourist areas to ensure visitor safety. He criticized the Mysuru City Corporation for not acting on earlier orders and said he will question the commissioner for this lapse. The MP called for organized zones for street vendors that officials can monitor regularly.
