Poland Scrambles Jets After Russia Strikes Kyiv Before US-Ukraine Peace Talks
December 27, 2025
Poland has scrambled fighter jets on its border with Ukraine after Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight. Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported at least one person dead and 28 injured in the attacks. Poland's military said the air force took a "preventative" step to secure its airspace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet former US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday for peace talks. Despite this, Zelensky claims Russia "does not want to end the war and is trying to use every opportunity to inflict more pain on Ukraine." He said Russia launched nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles targeting energy and civilian sites in Kyiv. Photos show apartment buildings with huge holes and fires. Thousands have lost power and heating as temperatures fall below freezing, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The Ukrainian emergency service evacuated 68 people from a retirement home in the eastern Darnytskyi district. Zelensky wrote on Telegram, "Russian representatives are having long conversations, but in reality the Daggers [missiles] and Shaheds [drones] are speaking for them." He called on America, Europe, and allies to take "really strong steps" against Russia. Poland deployed fighter jets, air defence, and radar to secure airspace near Ukraine. By Saturday morning, Poland said there was no violation of its airspace. Russia claimed to have destroyed seven Ukrainian drones overnight. On Saturday, Zelensky, EU leaders, and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen planned a phone call on peace efforts. Zelensky introduced a new 20-point peace draft, a revision of a previous 28-point plan seen as too favorable to Russia. He called it "a foundational document on ending the war." Trump told Politico that Zelensky "doesn't have anything until I approve it." The draft reportedly includes security guarantees from the US, NATO, and Europe for joint military responses if Russia invades again. Control of eastern Donbas remains a key issue, but Zelensky suggested a "free economic zone" might be an option. Trump expressed hope for the talks, saying, "I think it's going to go good with him. I think it's going to go good with [Vladimir] Putin," and he expects to speak with Putin "soon."
