CAT stays J&K govt order on ‘Urdu must’ for naib tehsildar posts

In a significant move to eliminate language-based discrimination, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has halted the Jammu and Kashmir government's directive mandating a graduation in Urdu for naib tehsildar positions. The tribunal instructed the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB) to consider candidates with graduation in any of the five official languages recognized in the Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Act, 2020: Hindi, Kashmiri, English, Dogri, and Urdu. CAT has summoned responses from the concerned parties, with a hearing scheduled for August 13. The decision has been met with approval by the BJP's Jammu and Kashmir unit, who had protested against the government order through demonstrations at the civil secretariat and the assembly.
