US Starts Random H-1B Visa Revocations; Travelers Face Long Wait for New Approvals
December 27, 2025
A troubling new trend has hit H-1B visa holders: random visa revocations by the US Department of State since December. One visa holder, forced to travel to India on November 2 for his father's urgent health emergency, received a shocking visa revocation notice on December 15. The notice said, "Please be advised that your US visa was revoked by the US Department of State on December 15, 2025. This action is based on the fact that subsequent to visa issuance, information has come to light indicating that you may be ineligible for your visa. Please note that you will be unable to travel on your current US visa. If you would like to travel to the United States, you must re-apply for a new visa," according to the US Consular General in Kolkata.
The visa holder said he was clueless about the revocation and had no criminal record or DUI offences. This incident also happened while he was outside the US. Experts say visa revocation generally occurs if an offense surfaces or if employers linked to the visa get blacklisted or investigated. However, many affected individuals report no violations.
The catch? New visa appointments in India face huge delays, sometimes up to a year, due to extended waiting times and new social media background checks. New visa applications must now pass social media vetting, adding to the wait.
Importantly, visa revocation has no immediate impact on those staying inside the US but becomes a big hurdle for those traveling abroad who need a new visa stamp to return.
This wave of unexplained visa cancellations is creating stress and uncertainty among H-1B workers and families reliant on quick international travel and re-entry to the US.
