US Northeast Faces Winter Storm Chaos With Flight Delays and Snowfall Up to a Foot
December 27, 2025
A fierce winter storm swept across the US Northeast on Saturday, bringing snow and ice that disrupted travel. New York and New Jersey declared weather emergencies due to hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service warned of heavy snow, up to a foot in parts of Long Island and the Hudson Valley. By 8 pm, snow had reached 3 inches in Somers, New York, 2.2 inches in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and nearly 2 inches on Long Island. New York City so far saw light snow with 0.3 inches in Central Park. Forecasters warned snow could fall up to 2 inches per hour overnight, increasing total snowfall.
Travel chaos hit during one of the busiest travel weekends after Christmas. FlightAware reported over 650 flight cancellations on Saturday, following more than 1,600 cancellations and 7,800 delays on Friday. Major airlines like American, United, and JetBlue waived change fees for affected passengers. New Jersey and Pennsylvania restricted commercial vehicles on key highways to maintain safety as roads deteriorated.
New York's acting governor, Tahesha Way, said, "This storm will cause dangerous road conditions and impact holiday travel. We are urging travelers to avoid travel during the storm and allow crews to tend to roads." The three main NYC airports—John F Kennedy, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia—warned travelers of expected disruptions through advisories on social media.
The heavy snow and ice have grounded air travel and made road journeys perilous, casting a shadow over the post-holiday travel rush in the US Northeast.
