LDF Wins Palakkad Panchayat Polls Amid Fierce Battles and Dramatic Draws
December 27, 2025
The elections for president and vice-president posts in Palakkad's three-tier panchayat bodies ended with exciting twists. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) clinched a clear win in the district panchayat. In 13 block panchayats, LDF won nine majorities, while the United Democratic Front (UDF) took three.
One notable deadlock happened in the 16-member Thrithala block panchayat, where both LDF and UDF won eight seats each. A draw of lots gave the prize to the LDF.
In the 88 grama panchayats, the LDF secured majority in 43, down from 63 previously. Several panchayats ended in ties. In Koppam, a draw favored LDF’s T. V. Valsala as president. Parali saw LDF take president's seat, and BJP won vice president’s post. Mathur panchayat shifted to UDF after a draw.
In Chalavara panchayat, represented by Local Administration Minister M.B. Rajesh, the UDF wrested control after decades following a draw. Congress’s Sandhya Suresh became president. Both LDF and UDF won eight seats each there, with BJP holding one.
Peringottukurissi panchayat saw Congress lose power after 60 years. LDF joined hands with Independent Democratic Front (IDF), led by ex-Congress leader A. V. Gopinathan.
In Agali panchayat, UDF initially led with 10 seats, LDF had nine and NDA two. But after a UDF member switched sides, UDF’s Manju C became president with LDF support, causing a dramatic upset.
