India’s Tumultuous 2025: Kumbh Stampedes, Terror Attack, Women NDA Officers & Pollution Crisis
December 28, 2025
The year 2025 in India saw big events and tough moments. Early in the year, the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj attracted 1.44 crore devotees for a 45-day festival. But tragedy struck with stampedes at the Kumbh and New Delhi Railway Station killing 18 and many more. Authorities blamed poor planning. In Jammu and Kashmir, a deadly terror attack on April 22 at Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam killed 25 tourists and a pony rider. The attack shocked the nation and led to a military response called Operation Sindoor targeting Pakistan. The Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh faced repeated floods and landslides throughout the year, continuing a recent pattern of natural disasters. In a positive breakthrough, the National Defence Academy celebrated its first batch of women cadets graduating as officers in May, a proud moment captured in smiling photos. Sports shined as Harmanpreet Kaur and the Indian Women’s Cricket Team won their first-ever Women’s Cricket World Cup. However, northern India battled severe air pollution as Delhi and its surroundings struggled with daily poor air quality. The government used measures like pole-mounted mist sprays, but the battle against pollution continued. Other notable events include a massive fire at the Kumbh Mela with no casualties, several other accidents like the crash of an Air India Boeing 787 near Ahmedabad, floods triggered by cloudbursts, and tragic stampedes at IPL victory celebrations and political gatherings. The country also saw environmental concerns with tidal waves damaging coastal areas during Cyclone Montha. The year ended with rain hitting Chennai and ongoing efforts to reduce pollution and manage crowded events. 2025 reflected India’s challenges and resilience across culture, security, environment, and sports.
