Thamarassery Pass Bans Multi-Axle Vehicles During Daytime to Prevent Traffic Jams
December 28, 2025
The Thamarassery police have imposed a daytime ban on multi-axle vehicles and heavy goods carriers on the Thamarassery pass for at least one week. The move aims to prevent traffic jams on the mountain road. Multi-axle vehicles will be redirected through the Kuttiyadi pass until further notice. The police cited the upcoming New Year celebrations and rising traffic snarls caused by heavy vehicles as key reasons. "A rise in the number of multi-axle vehicles had led to recurring traffic snarls on the route, hampering the movement of emergency vehicles," said the police. Complaints about rash driving and speeding by tourist vehicles were also noted. Authorities warned that immediate legal action will be taken against lane violations and illegal parking. Members of the Thamarassery ghat road protection committee called for a dedicated recovery van to swiftly handle rescue calls. They highlighted the lack of crane services as a major cause of long vehicle waits during breakdowns. Various voluntary groups urged the launch of an exclusive emergency rescue service for the pass. They also proposed banning multi-axle vehicles until 10 p.m. Local officials demanded widening of critical hairpin curves, suggesting the heavy vehicle diversion via Kuttiyadi pass should continue until the road improvements are done. These steps aim to keep the busy inter-district route safe and smooth for travelers.
