Nine Stabbed to Death, Including Five Children, Near Suriname Capital
December 29, 2025
Nine people, including five children, were stabbed to death in a tragic attack near Suriname's capital, Paramaribo, police said. The incident happened Saturday night on a road outside the city. Authorities also took two victims, an adult and a child, to hospital with serious injuries.
Police detained a male suspect at the scene after shooting him in the leg. The man was hospitalized and is under police guard. Local media reports say the suspect may have mental health issues, citing officials and residents.
Suriname's president said the victims included family members and neighbours of the suspect. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons commented, "At a time when family and friends should be holding on to and supporting each other, we are confronted with the harsh reality that there is another side to the world. I wish all the bereaved much strength, courage and comfort during this unimaginably difficult time."
Police said more details about the incident will be given soon. Stabbing deaths are rare in Suriname, a country with one of the lowest rates in the world. However, Suriname has a history of coups and civil war since its independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
