Scheduled Caste Woman Cook Faces Caste Bias at Karur School; Complaint Filed Under SC/ST Act
December 29, 2025
A Scheduled Caste woman named R. Nirosha, working as a temporary cook under the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme at a middle school in Karur district, was stopped from cooking on December 16. She alleged that the school’s headmistress told her that caste-Hindu students refused to eat food prepared by her. The headmistress asked Nirosha to quit or face removal. Nirosha found a new cook appointed the next day.
She took the issue to the Branch Manager of Mahalir Thittam, Sathya, who rejected her plea. Nirosha said, "The caste discrimination really hurts me. I have been undergoing mental agony ever since I was asked not to cook for the children." Despite submitting petitions to senior officials including the Collector, she received no help.
Nirosha then filed a police complaint. Police registered an FIR against the headmistress Banumathi and Sathya under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. A Mahalir Thittam senior official claimed that caste-Hindu students had refused the food and the school feared losing students. The official denied that Nirosha was removed, saying she would resume work after holidays.
This incident highlights ongoing caste issues affecting government schemes in Tamil Nadu.
