The Tripura Chakma Students Association on Sunday, December 28, 2025, asked the central government to step in after repeated attacks on students from Northeast India across the country. The call came during a press conference in Agartala following the death of Angel Chakma, a Tripura student brutally attacked in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He later died in hospital. Chief Minister Manik Saha spoke on the phone with Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami about the case. Dr. Saha said he received a promise from Mr. Dhami to fully investigate the attack and ensure justice for Angel Chakma. Dr. Saha is expected to visit Angel's family near Agartala on Monday, December 29. Tripura police officials are in touch with Uttarakhand police regarding the incident that sparked protests in Tripura. Six suspects are wanted for the murder; five have been arrested. Leaders of the Chakma Students Association expressed deep worry over the safety of Northeast students amidst rising violence and harassment. They urged the government to act quickly and enforce strict laws against hate crimes and offensive remarks targeting Northeast people. The Association warned that such "unwarranted incidents" may lead to serious consequences. They plan to hold a candlelight march in Agartala on Monday, December 29, to honor Angel Chakma. On Tuesday, December 30, they will submit a petition to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha seeking severe punishment for the attackers and compensation for the family from Tripura and Uttarakhand governments. Meanwhile, Pradyot Kishore Manikya, founder of Tipra Motha, condemned the murder and pledged to continue fighting for justice. Angel Chakma’s last rites were held in Agartala on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
