The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the Aravalli hills definition row. The matter is set for hearing on Monday, December 29, 2025. A vacation bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih will likely hear the case. This follows the Court's November 20 decision where it accepted a uniform definition for the Aravalli hills and ranges. It banned granting fresh mining leases in the Aravalli areas spanning Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat until experts submit reports. A committee recommended the "Aravalli Hill" be defined as any landform with an elevation of 100 metres or more above local relief in designated Aravalli districts. An "Aravalli Range" is a set of two or more such hills within 500 metres of each other. This move aims to protect the environment across these states and restrict mining activities until proper expert evaluation is complete. The Court's attention signals the importance of preserving the Aravalli range.
