On December 29, 2025, the Supreme Court of India stopped the implementation of its earlier orders and an expert committee report on the Aravalli Hills' definition. The court worried that changing the definition might be misunderstood and allow unregulated mining in sensitive ecological areas. A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant with Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.G. Masih stressed the need for an unbiased expert opinion before acting on any reports or directions. The Chief Justice of India said the court will review whether limiting the Aravallis to landforms 100 meters or above could lead to unregulated mining. In November, the court asked the Centre to prepare a Comprehensive Management Plan for Sustainable Mining before approving new mining in the region. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that a committee’s earlier report was accepted but could only be applied after court approval and expert checks. The Bench plans to set up a high-powered expert committee to study the Aravalli range’s definition closely. Notices have been sent to all involved parties. The Attorney General and senior advocate P. Parmeshwar are helping the court decide on the new committee’s members. The court ordered that previous committee recommendations and directions be put on hold until the new panel is formed. The next hearing is scheduled for January 21.
