Trump and Zelensky Show Optimism After Long Talks, But Ukraine Peace Still Unclear
December 29, 2025
Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky met for two and a half hours at Mar-a-Lago, their longest talk so far. Both called it a "terrific meeting" and praised the "great discussions on all the topics." Despite the upbeat tone, no real progress was made. Ukraine’s future borders are still a mystery. Russia demands territorial concessions, and apparently the US supports this, but Zelensky has not agreed publicly. He did say a referendum could approve any deal, leaving the door open. Security guarantees were said by Zelensky to be "100%" agreed with the US, but what that means is not clear. It’s also unknown if Russia would accept any deal. Russia has already rejected ideas like a ceasefire or multinational monitoring. Trump’s positive comments about Putin show he believes Russia "wants to see Ukraine succeed." Yet, all pressure seems on Zelensky so far. The talks ended with hope but no signs peace will come soon.
