Winter Storm Ezra Bomb Cyclone Grounds Thousands of US Flights, Triggers Blizzard and Power Outages
December 30, 2025
A powerful winter storm called Winter Storm Ezra turned into a bomb cyclone on Monday. It hit the US hard, causing travel chaos just before the New Year holidays. The storm brought blizzard conditions, fierce winds, and power outages from the Midwest to the East Coast. Nearly 6,000 flights were delayed and over 750 cancelled by Monday afternoon. Since Friday, the storm caused over 3,600 cancellations and more than 30,000 delays. Major airports like Washington Dulles, Boston, Newark, and Detroit imposed flight stops or delays due to high winds and low visibility. Detroit airport briefly stopped Delta flights. Airlines like American, United, Delta, and JetBlue waived change fees for passengers affected by the storm. Roads became dangerous with icy patches and near-zero visibility, causing multi-vehicle accidents in several states. Authorities in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes warned against non-essential travel. FEMA highlighted the dangerous driving conditions. The storm is called a bomb cyclone because it quickly strengthened as atmospheric pressure dropped sharply in 24 hours. Arctic cold air met warm southern air, causing dramatic temperature drops, such as a nearly 50°F fall overnight in parts of the central US. Philadelphia's temperatures dropped from near 60°F to the low 20s at night. Blizzard conditions hit the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes. Wind chills dropped to minus 30°F in North Dakota and Minnesota. Snowfall reached two feet in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where strong winds caused whiteout conditions. Over 350,000 customers lost power nationwide, with Michigan and upstate New York hardest hit. Lake Superior saw waves nearly 20 feet high, forcing cargo ships to seek shelter. Lake Erie’s eastern shoreline near Buffalo faced water surges and flooding fears. Forecasters warned hazardous snow, ice, rain, and winds will continue into Tuesday as the storm moves east. The Northeast expects freezing rain and more lake-effect snow. Travelers are urged to keep checking weather and flight updates as Winter Storm Ezra continues to batter the country.
