The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the Dehradun district magistrate and the SSP after the racially charged killing of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura. Anjel was attacked by some youths on December 9 with knives and a bracelet and died on December 26 after a 17-day hospital stay. His father, a BSF jawan posted in Manipur, said Anjel was attacked after trying to defend his brother from racial slurs. Anjel told the attackers, "I was also Indian, not Chinese," before they assaulted him. The NHRC has taken cognisance under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The complaint states the attack was racially motivated and noted it raised concerns about deep-rooted discrimination against North Eastern people. The NHRC has ordered the Dehradun authorities to investigate the case and submit a report within seven days. A copy of case proceedings must go to the Uttarakhand chief secretary and the police chief. The commission also directed authorities to ensure the safety of all students from the North East across the state. On December 29, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke with Anjel’s father and promised strict action against the accused. Political leaders have called for a united fight against hate crimes targeting North Eastern communities.
