NESO Demands Death Penalty for Killers of Tripura Student Anjel Chakma in Dehradun
December 30, 2025
The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has asked for capital punishment for the attackers who caused the death of Tripura student Anjel Chakma. Anjel died after being stabbed in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. NESO, along with other groups, also wants an anti-racism act to stop such crimes.
In a letter to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on December 30, 2025, NESO demanded a special police station to handle racial discrimination cases against people from the Northeast. They said Anjel, 24, and his brother Michael were attacked on December 9 because they looked different and faced racial abuse.
NESO condemned this violence and said harassment of Northeast people happens in many places in India. They urged CM Dhami to act quickly to protect the mental, social, and physical safety of Northeast students and residents in Uttarakhand.
The All India Chakma Students’ Union had asked on December 29 to move the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and shift the trial out of Uttarakhand, recommending Delhi.
Tarun Prasad Chakma, Anjel's father, said, "My appeal is that what happened to my son should not happen to other children from the northeast. The northeast is also a part of India. We are also Indians." The family and supporters seek justice and safety for Northeast people across mainland India.
