Snowfall and Traffic Chaos in Munnar Cause Lengthy Delays and One Death
December 30, 2025
Snowfall in the high mountains and chilled weather have hit the Munnar hills hard, leading to severe traffic jams. Vehicles have been stuck for four to five hours on main roads. For the past week, long traffic blocks have paralyzed this popular tourist spot. Even Idukki District Police Chief K.M. Sabu Mathew’s vehicle was stuck in the congestion.
The traffic problem turned deadly on Sunday. Mariswami Palraj, 35, from Vattavada-Koviloor, was found vomiting blood at home. Relatives tried to rush him 43 km to Munnar, but the vehicle got stuck for hours on the way. At Top Station, Mariswami had sadly died.
Sources say Munnar sees far more tourists than it can handle, especially on holidays. Narrow roads get blocked by large tourist buses, causing long delays. "On Christmas Day, many were trapped for hours without water or toilets," a source said. They suggested an e-pass system like those in Ooty and Kodaikanal to control vehicle flow.
Vinod Vattekkatt of Kerala Travel Mart said such jams are normal on weekends but now have grown worse. He said more traffic police and better parking would help. Many tourists park on narrow roads, causing gridlock.
G. Sojan from the 'My Munnar Movement' proposed special bus services from Rajamala, Mattupetty, and Top Station to reduce private vehicle use.
Anil P.B., Vice President of Greens Munnar, also called for multi-level parking on Devikulam Road to ease town congestion.
The cold snap since mid-December draws thousands who want to enjoy frost and chilly air. But many face long traffic jams turning their dream trips into nightmares.
