Russia Still Importing Michelin Aviation Tyres via Intermediaries Despite Sanctions
December 30, 2025
Russia is still importing aviation tyres made by the French company Michelin through intermediary firms, even after sanctions banned such sales. Customs records show that between October 2024 and March 2025, Russia received 2,687 Michelin tyres worth more than $7 million. This continued trade comes despite Michelin ending all exports to Russia in March 2022 following the Ukraine invasion. The shipments were sent by companies in Turkey, Spain, Saudi Arabia, India, and an apparent UK-based firm called General Trade Solutions (UK), which does not appear to be officially registered in the UK. The largest Russian buyer in 2024, Melaris LLC, supplies the Russian military-industrial complex. Michelin said it is committed to fully following sanctions and has strengthened its checks to stop product diversion. A Michelin spokesman said, "The adaptation of our compliance programme to diversion risk has significantly reduced instances of circumventions." He also warned about risks related to counterfeiting and false declarations. Roman Steblivskyi from Ukraine's Economic Security Council said Russian aviation depends on Western tyres due to their quality. He urged Michelin to be more proactive in preventing re-exports to Russia. France's duty of care law demands companies address risks in human rights, health, and environment but does not explicitly cover sanctions risks. Michelin stated it continuously updates its export control and sanctions policies to reduce diversion risks.
