Power Failure Shuts London-Paris Trains Via Channel Tunnel, Stranding Passengers
December 30, 2025
Most trains running between London and Paris were suspended due to a power failure and a broken-down LeShuttle train in the Channel Tunnel. Passengers were stuck at St Pancras and Gare du Nord stations. Jack Slater said, “We’re being advised to re-book for tomorrow, but all of the trains are fully booked already so the only option would be to upgrade to a first class seat - which is an extra lot of money.” Drivers wanting to take the LeShuttle car train from Folkestone to Calais also faced hours of delays, as the tunnel was closed until power was restored.
Stephanie Roberts, returning from France, told us she waited more than five hours in Calais with her family and dog. She said, “There was very little information. We were waiting for more than five hours before we could board a train. There was no food or water, but luckily we had a baguette.” Kate, another passenger, faced three-hour delays before services were suspended, forcing her to take a costly ferry instead. She said, “It’s not the end of the world but has cost us an extra £158.”
Eurostar slowly resumed some services by afternoon, but many trains remain cancelled or heavily delayed. Passengers were warned to avoid traveling unless their train runs. Eurostar also cut its London-Amsterdam service short, ending trains at Brussels only.
A Department for Transport spokesperson said, “Significant disruption is likely for the remainder of the day.” Getlink, which runs the Channel Tunnel, said LeShuttle services resumed slowly but with delays. They apologized for the inconvenience and plan extra shuttles.
Eurostar advised passengers, “The overhead power supply issue remains, and we strongly advise all our passengers to postpone their journey.” It added that refunds, rebooking, and compensation options are available. Travel experts recommended checking updates and considering other travel routes like ferries.
Hundreds of travelers were seen walking away from Eurostar at St Pancras after cancellations. Frustrated passengers shared stories of hours-long waits, lack of clear information, and the struggle to cope with unplanned costs. With New Year’s Eve plans in chaos, the Channel Tunnel trouble has left many stuck in a travel nightmare.
