Four Abandoned Leopard Cubs Rescued Near Bengaluru, Efforts Underway to Reunite Them with Mother
December 30, 2025
The PfA Wildlife Hospital in Bengaluru rescued four abandoned leopard cubs on Tuesday near Big Banyan Tree, Tavarekere. The cubs, three females and one male, are about five to seven days old. They were found dehydrated due to human activity forcing their mother to leave. "Upon receiving the call, the authorities immediately activated its Quick Rescue Reaction Team, reaching the spot within 30 minutes," the hospital said. After a thorough search for the mother, the cubs were taken for medical care. Ultrasonography confirmed no internal injuries. They were fed with a special nutritional formula after missing several nursing sessions. Col. Navaz Shariff, Chief Wildlife Veterinarian, said, "The Leopard mothers rarely choose to abandon their cubs. They are often compelled to leave due to increasing human presence. Our responsibility is to intervene only when required, and then step back to let nature reconnect. Tonight, we are making efforts to give the mother the best chance to return to her cubs." The rescue came after Deputy Range Forest Officer Ravi alerted the hospital. Plans are now in place to return the cubs to their original site for a monitored reunification. To help, recorded cub vocalisations will be played and urine scent placed strategically to aid the mother in locating them. Teams will stay distant to reduce stress on the animals. Dr. Shariff added, "These cubs deserve the chance to grow in the wild, where they belong. We are committed to helping make that possible."
