J&K Court Grants Bail to Six Policemen in 2023 Custodial Torture Case
December 30, 2025
On December 30, 2025, a court in Jammu and Kashmir granted bail to eight people, including six policemen, linked to the alleged custodial torture of a policeman in 2023. The court directed the accused to “remain present before the trial court on each and every date of hearing unless exempted” and warned that any breach may lead to bail cancellation. Bail bonds of ₹1 lakh with one surety were accepted. The accused must deposit their passports and are barred from leaving the court's territorial area without permission. The court also warned them against “intimidation, hampering or tampering with the prosecution evidence” and said, “Nor shall they threaten any prosecution witness to hamper the trial.”
The case concerns allegations by policeman Khurshid Ahmad Chohan, who accused two civilians and six policemen, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh, of custodial torture in February 2023. The Supreme Court in 2025 ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to report on the case status. The CBI chargesheet stated the victim’s “genital organs and testicles were amputated” during interrogation at a Kupwara centre. The CBI registered the case under several IPC sections covering criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, causing hurt and grievous hurt, and wrongful confinement lasting more than three days.
