19-Year-Old Woman Killed in Karnataka Honour Attack Over Inter-Caste Marriage
December 31, 2025
In a chilling crime from Karnataka, 19-year-old Manya Vivekananda Doddamani was fatally attacked on December 21, 2025. Her father and five others attacked her in Inam Veerapur village, Dharwad district. Manya was married to a Madiga man, a lower caste, which angered her Lingayat family. The couple had married in May despite strong family opposition and police intervention. Pregnant and assuming peace had returned, Manya came back home in December. Instead, she faced a brutal assault and died in hospital. Her husband and in-laws were injured too and are recovering. Six accused are now in custody, while police search for nine more suspects. Two policemen and a panchayat officer have been suspended for negligence. This killing highlights the cruel reality of honour crimes linked to caste in Karnataka. Recent years saw similar cases, including a nursing student killed for love across caste lines and a couple sentenced to death in 2019 for a comparable murder. Dalit groups are now protesting and demanding a law against honour violence named after Manya. Karnataka recently passed a law against social boycott by caste panchayats. Yet, caste-based hatred fuels these brutal acts. Manya's tragic death is a stark reminder that caste discrimination remains strong despite India's progress.
