Sydney Prepares for New Year’s Eve Fireworks Amid Tight Security After Bondi Attack
December 31, 2025
Thousands flocked to key spots in Sydney for New Year’s Eve fireworks. Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and other famous locations filled quickly by Wednesday morning. NSW Premier Chris Minns called on Sydneysiders to "square your shoulders, puff out your chest and walk out" to show strength after the shocking Bondi attack.
More than 2,500 police officers are on duty in the city, some armed with long guns to ensure safety. "We need to show strength and resilience during this period," Minns said. Police will blend with crowds to watch for trouble, staying visible but discreet.
Transport for NSW expects over a million people to enjoy the festivities around the harbour. Transport Minister John Graham said there would be over a thousand extra public transport services, a 40% increase from usual. Services will run nonstop for 46 hours. Roads near the CBD will close from noon, and harbour train stations will shut off gradually starting 3pm.
Minns said police have put "extra measures" on public transport but did not share specific plans. Regarding a royal commission into the Bondi attack, Minns said NSW will move forward with its own inquiry despite calls for a federal commission. "We believe there needs to be fundamental change in NSW to combat antisemitism, to combat extremism in our community," he said.
Minns also revealed he visited Ahmed al-Ahmed, the Bondi hero, who remains hospitalized. "His injuries are very serious … he was in serious danger of not making it, and his recovery has been phenomenal," Minns said, respecting the man’s privacy while offering hope for his recovery.
