CITU Backs Nationwide Strike to Repeal Labour Codes, Opposes Steel Plant Privatisation
December 31, 2025
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has extended full support to a nationwide general strike. The strike was called by the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and All India Sectoral Federations. It demands the repeal of the Labour Codes.
This decision was formalised through a resolution at CITU’s 18th All India Conference in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. President K. Hemalata hoisted the CITU flag. Following this, she and other leaders paid floral tribute at the martyrs’ column.
Visakhapatnam was highlighted as a key public sector hub with the Steel Plant, Port, NTPC, and HPCL. Reception committee chairman Ch. Narasinga Rao said the city remains a frontline of the working-class movement.
General secretary Tapan Sen welcomed trade union leaders and Pambis Kyritsis, general secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions. Kyritsis praised the Indian working class and united kisan movements. He expressed solidarity with the upcoming February 12, 2026 strike, calling the Labour Codes "anti-worker." He promised international trade union support saying, "The CITU would never be alone in its struggle."
President Hemalata moved the resolution demanding repeal of the four Labour Codes and the success of the general strike. It was passed with loud applause. Another resolution by Tapan Sen opposed privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. It called to protect workers’ public sector undertakings.
Leaders from other major trade unions joined the conference, including Mantri Rajashekhar of Indian National Trade Union Congress, Amarjeet Kaur of All India Trade Union Congress, and Sudarshan Rao of Hind Mazdoor Sabha. Their presence showed broad unity against the Labour Codes.
