The District Development Committee (DDC) meeting in Malappuram raised concerns over the shortage of specialist doctors. MLAs P. Abdul Hameed and Kurukkoli Moideen demanded more posts in the meeting chaired by District Collector V.R. Vinod on Tuesday. The Health department approved 202 super and specialty posts for hospitals across the state. But Malappuram district received just four. The MLAs called this "unfair and discriminatory" towards the state's largest district by population. They said doctor posts should be given out fairly. District Medical Officer T.K. Jayanthy said a proposal for 595 new doctor posts in district hospitals was sent to the government. The Collector asked the Health department to follow up on this. Tirur MLA Moideen raised the issue of cancer patients at Tirur District Hospital facing medicine delays. Even after paying, medicines were not supplied by Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL). The District Collector directed the DMO to work with KMSCL to solve this. Dr. Jayanthy said cancer outpatient and chemotherapy services run daily except Sundays. Due to a shortage in oncology doctors, mammography and chemotherapy are only available on alternate days. The district hopes to resolve these gaps soon.
